I've applied for a postdoc position starting from Sep. 2025 almost a year ago.
1) early Oct, 2024 - applied for the position by online advertisement at the Workday website. (NOTE: it was a cold application - I (and my PhD advisor) had no prior connections or networkings with ANL)
2) two weeks later (late Oct. 2024) - notified and scheduled a prescreen interview: host PI and core project members joined the interview and asked i) details and roles of research projects (written on my CV) I led/participated, and ii) requested me to explain details of one of published papers, including the main hypothesis and proposed methods.
Thus, potential interviewees should prepare short slides on your main research papers that you are proud of. Also, be sure to provide the core idea/hypothesis/method/results of your research in a timely manner. The interview lasts an hour, including several Q&As, which was a bit pressured and nerve-wracking.
3) two months later (mid of Dec. 2024) - I've suddenly been invited to conduct a one-hour research seminar open to all people at ANL. More than 10 people participated, and they sometimes asked question during seminar. Please keep strictly to the time, taking into account the Q&A session, and also prepare your slides in a simple manner without too much in-depth detail; the audience is from diverse backgrounds.
4) the very next day (mid of Dec. 2024) - I've invited to a four-hour final interview, which consists of five (30min./1hr./30min./1hr./1hr.) sessions, and 1/3/1/2/1 ANL employee(s) participated. They were all nice, and each of them asked me questions ranging from small-talks like my hobbies to in-depth research-related questions. Overall, the final interview was not as difficult as the pre-screen interview, but it was long and thus physically demanding (as it was early morning due to the time difference).
5) offer letter arrived (Jan. 2025) - Due to the end-of-year holiday, I had to wait until early January. The offer was extended, and I had one more meeting with HR team about salary (100K+) and benefits,
