      Senior DevOps Engineer Interview

      28 Feb 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Amount (Chicago, IL) in Feb 2020

      Interview

Pretty standard interview process. Started out with a phone screen which was fine. Had a second call which was a coder pad where they asked me to show I knew how to create a map/dictionary (this was a pretty mediocre way of assessing my technical skills). He then asked me to build a calculator app where I felt like he was more excited to point out my mistakes immediately rather than let me work through the problem. Apparently I did well enough on that and was moved on to an 'onsite' (I don't live in Chicago so it was done digitally). Here is where my issues were. The interview process was very very informal. Most of the folks that I talked to asked me very basic questions that mostly felt like I was just hanging out. One guy I talked to didn't even have anything prepared and the conversation was very awkward. Another interviewer opened up a 1000 line python program and was just like 'What do you think?'. First of all I am not a python programmer, so asking me to read python and give you in depth details about it is just absurd. My expertise is in Go and LAMP which the interviewer knew. Good luck to anyone who interviews because they don't do a good job of asking the right questions to assess technical skills. My advice is give people a take home test where they have time to show their expertise.
