The initial interview was a one-on-one call. Upon arriving in the zoom meeting, I found that the interviewer was not alone but in the zoom room with a friend having a social conversation. I was startled, but the friend left, and the interview commenced. They asked me very few questions about my training or background as an editor and it was clear that they had not reviewed my CV or editing sample in advance. They spent the majority of the time "pitching" their company, although I had been the one to reach out in the first place. After a brief conversation, they suggested that we advance to a second interview. They also asked that I send forward my salary expectations by email. I did so after careful research, and they came back telling me their anticipated salary for the position was about 40% less than the range I had suggested, stating that the position was "entry level" despite needing 3-5 years experience and an advanced degree. I declined to continue the process at that stage.
