      Exciting time to join Rochester

      Head of quality
      Current employee
      Rochester, South East England, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

I've just celebrated 40 years service at Rochester and there has never been a more exciting time to join our team. We are investing £200M+ in a new facility and demand for our products is high giving us confidence in the longer term future of this facility. We have opportunities across all functions and at all levels from trainees to experienced professionals. We are proud of roles in our missions of "we protect those who protect us" and "we innovate for those who move the world". If you join our team you will get to work on a diverse range of high technology products ranging includes advanced displays and controls. We operate across military and civil and across Land, Air and Sea and you will get the opportunity to collaborate across our other businesses. Our quality teams are supportive with a transparent focus on career progression and development. We are really proud of our quality culture at Rochester and proud to say that we are a finalist in the 2025 CQI Quality Organisation of the year award. Kent is a great place to live and work, we are less than an hour from London or the beaches and the weather is usually better than the UK average. There are many employee benefits working at BAE Systems and our people policies are very supportive of work life balance needs of our employees. Now is a great time to join our quality focussed teams and I hope some of you will join and go on to have as an exciting and fulfilling career as I have. The best part of Rochester ? The people. Come and be part of our team and help us deliver our missions.

      Cons

To support collaboration and knowledge transfer we expect people to be on site at least 4 days a week. We are proud of our culture and we want you to feel part of our team at Rochester, we believe you can only do this by being with us on site. If you are looking for a hybrid or work from home role then this isn't likely to be the place for you. We are are part of a big organisation and bureaucracy can stifle things, but maybe you help us improve our efficiency and processes.

      Good

      Designer
      Current employee
      Barrow in Furness, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Flexible, relaxed, work from home. Great team and manager. Open communication. Supportive.

      Cons

BAE submarines are paid much less than equivalent BAE air role. No in grade salary scale progression, requiring promotion/job change to earn more. Very large contractor population, often earning 2x staff pay, so staff roles becoming less attractive.

Good Office Culture and Opportunities to Learn

      Mechanical engineering intern
      Former intern
      Melbourne
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Management was amazing, had the opportunity to learn what I wanted and the flexibility to work from home. Also was able to extend my internship, and most people were offered a graduate role. Also provides additional training opportunities on top of the mandatory ones where you can learn all kinds of skills like systems engineering and hazard management.

      Cons

Can be difficult to adapt to coming into the office and the social norms.

      Former intern

      Recommend

      Cons

limited interaction, siloed, work from home

Good Pay - If you can put up with it (Subs @ Barrow)

      Senior engineer
      Current employee
      Barrow in Furness, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Great training opportunities (including further education), Good salary and share scheme. Some great people to work with, including talented engineers and project staff. Flexible working hours and remote work opportunities a welcome benefit.

      Cons

Company is slow to progress and insane levels of bureaucracy limit progress, even when engineers know how something can be achieved. Staff in positions with both too little and too much oversight - unlimited budget and time to complete a task, yet managment and project limits actual engineering that can be done. Few take pride in their work - "easy job" for some with no drive to progress themselves, their department or the business. Induction also very difficult with departments creating their own "onboarding" which can consist of nothing. Frustrating lunar pay calendar that can't be changed.
