What is a Merchandise Analyst?

Merchandise analysts are responsible for monitoring and analyzing the flow of inventory, typically for a store or other retail operation, which may include both physical and online operations. They implement and operate systems to track buying activity and other consumer behavior. They continuously track and study this activity, often in real time, and identify emerging trends in customer interest. They use these data-driven insights to make immediate recommendations that guide inventory management and procurement. They also generate reports, logs, and other data analysis materials.

Merchandise analysts typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in a business or data analytics area, and professional experience in data analytics, merchandising, logistics, or a similar role. They should have strong data analytics skills, and proficiency using data software programs like Excel.

Job Overview

Responsibilities for Merchandise Analyst

  • Complete price changes and sign audits, and replaces missing or incorrect product pricing.
  • Manage all front store merchandising vendor funding activities and analysis, as well as analytical support for all lines on the category P&L and other category related financial impacts.
  • Responsible for ad hoc analytical support to generate and interpret financial and business specific analysis as well as creating forecasts and communicating variances to business owners and senior management.
  • Use analysis of supplier allowance funding trends and forecasts to identify risks and opportunities which may impact category profitability.
  • Move through multiple tasks during your shift while providing a high level of customer service and achieving sales goals.
  • Retrieve and prepare merchandise for stocking, prints pricing labels and perform price verifications, removes product from packaging and affixes pricing labels/stickers as needed and organizes prepared merchandise for stocking on applicable fixtures.
  • Communicate mispriced items, research on-hand quantities of RTVs and submit inventory adjustment requests.
  • Execute activities related to store initiatives to offer customers additional products and services (e.g., special sale items, credit card applications).
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and exhibit safe work practices at all times.
  • Readily adjust schedule, tasks, and priorities when necessary to meet business needs.

Qualifications for Merchandise Analyst

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, computer science, or statistics.
  • Fluent in a variety of programming languages, software, and systems.
  • Experience with planograms, spreadsheets, and tablets.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and fluency in solution selling.
  • Fluent in product and services offerings.
  • A collaborator with time management skills.
  • Comfortable compiling newsletters.
