Thank you for sharing this. I’m glad you had a positive experience with colleagues in EMEA — they are totally wonderful. Acknowledging what you wrote, when leadership changes feel like they’ve “sucked the life out of the company,” that’s not a small statement. Organizational shifts are sometimes necessary, but the way they’re experienced by people is what defines culture. If the experience has felt discouraging or like people are being pushed out, that’s important feedback and that's absolutely not the outcome we want. We’re continuing to look closely at how we lead through change: how we set expectations, how we communicate, and how we support teams through transitions. Culture isn’t preserved by default or lack of intention. It requires attention, intention and adjustment. I'll bring this feedback back to my team to learn from. I appreciate you taking the time to say this directly. -Megan Pittman, Chief People Officer, dbt Labs

Pros

Strong inbound, fast changing product largely without competition. I’m getting career defining experience here

Cons

If you’re a passenger looking for a cozy place to chill, this isn’t it. Startups are lots of adapting, dealing with challenges. Risk/reward isn’t for everyone

Pros

I’ve been here a few years now. Things have evolved over time, but the core of the company has largely stayed the same since I started. Like most growing companies, some things get diluted as you scale, but I’ve actually found the opposite within teams — the inner-team culture has become stronger. Leadership genuinely cares and wants people to do well. dbt is also moving in a strong direction when it comes to developing both new and experienced leaders. There are some incredibly smart people here - like Lori, Kathryn, and Joe - who invest a lot of time in helping others grow, more than I’ve seen at most companies. If you’re willing to work hard, there’s a lot of opportunity to grow here. A lot of that ultimately comes down to how much you want to put in. dbt is currently going through the very normal (and sometimes messy) transition from startup to scale-up. There are gaps, but they’re being addressed by smart people, and there’s plenty of opportunity to step in and take on projects you care about. Personally, leaning into those opportunities has been one of the biggest drivers of my growth here, and it’s been a much faster trajectory than I experienced in previous companies.

Cons

On the flip side, there is a lot of change. As mentioned, the company is moving from a startup to a scale-up, which naturally brings shifts in people, processes, and priorities. At times that can create a bit of uncertainty, but in my experience things tend to settle and improve over the course of a few months as the new structures take shape.
