I worked at Nokia full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Colleagues are nice and helpful, and many of them are smart and excellent on their research.

    Cons

Too much effort on selling immature research to business units. Unbelievable amount of time is spent in presentation and demo preparations which end up to nothing all the time, and relative little in solving the actual problem at hand. Too many management layers compared to researchers actually get the job done. Poor management as you can notice a large amount of duplication of work across teams in Bell Labs as well... as in R&D of Nokia due to lack of communication, or simply because different managers want a piece of the pie of the next Big Thing as mentioned in another review. Salary is not bad at start but not after two years as it is almost not increasing.

    Advice to Management

Separate the roles of managers and researchers. Let managers be managers, and let researchers be researchers! Make environment that can solve the problem first, not the one wants to sell the future solution first, at least internally.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Nokia full-time for more than a year

    Pros

On the upside I would put the relative freedom that you have in selecting the projects you would like to work on, and the approach that you will follow in tackling them. Also there is a good level of respect and humility in the work place. People are kind and helpful.

    Cons

    - Management is basically comprised of ex-researches, with poor management skills. - Although there is an effort to connect Bell Labs with the real word challenges faced in the market, this effort unfortunately falls short. - An unbelievable amount of time is spent in presentation and demo preparations, and relative little in solving the problem at hand. The more buzzwords you put on your presentations, the... better. Often the presentations are misleading, because they make claims that don't hold, or omit to mention important limitations. - There is a large amount of duplication of work across teams, due to lack of communication, or simply because different managers want a piece of the pie of the next Big Thing (e.g. analytics, ML, Cloud) - Compensation is average, and it increases in-pace (that is slowly) with the industry average. In other words, if you are a smart engineer/researcher, you are better off in another company.

I worked at Nokia full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good people to work with - highly motivated, and from a very diverse background especially in Bell Labs. Physical working environment is pleasant. Work/life balance is excellent.

    Cons

Salaries could be better - many are below market rate for the job, and review budgets are tiny. Business decisions get made by planners outside of Ireland, who don't necessarily have the best interests of the Irish operation at heart

    Advice to Management

Need to push upwards regarding salary budget allocation, and also ensure Ireland operation retains its "centre of excellence" reputation, otherwise lower cost geographies will prevail
