A very fun and challenging place to work

Pros

Money and benefits are great, never leave you waiting for your pay. The environment is fun and challenging, most of the time. Being a remote first company is great as it allows for a truly international and diverse team to be built across so many of the sites. Slack is filled with people who are passionate about the art and industry of video games, couldn't ask to work with a better group of people. I've had some difficult times in my personal life during my team here, and management has always been extremely understanding.

Cons

Honestly, not any that I can think of at this point. Work gets tough sometimes because the industry is tough sometimes.

Pros

- It's entry level work to get your foot in the door writing about video games. - There are some opportunities to be promoted from within.

Cons

- Gamurs has developed a full content mill mindset. Full-time writers are expected to publish 5+ articles a day without exceptions, and freelance rates are low. - As a result, rushing and forgoing quality is borderline encouraged. Article output is valued over everything else, even if that approach historically generates less traffic than more thoughtful work. - Upper management demonstrates very poor knowledge about the game industry or what it takes to write about video games. Higher ups will demand content on certain games at a moment's notice, and then reprimand writers for not immediately producing content on those games that would require dozens of hours of investment into playing them. - Despite acquiring several websites, each website owned by Gamurs has devolved into chasing the same SEO trends. This, in turn, means you can be penalized for not generating enough traffic when the reason is because you're competing with other writers writing the exact same content within the parent company. - Turnover is monstrous. Key staff members with years of experience in the game industry can be fired at a moment's notice for "performance issues" without any warning. Even if you keep your job, the damage to morale these firings inflict on staff members is enormous, but that seems to never be taken into consideration.

Layoffs Are Inevitable

Pros

Remote work, flexible hours, the people you directly work with are awesome!

Cons

-Layoffs WILL happen. In my short time at GAMURS, there were multiple teams laid off. In fact, everyone that was on my team previously has been laid off since I last worked there. Right before I left, there was a huge push for managers to hire contractors internationally so that they could get a higher output of articles at a cheaper rate. -They do not care about you as an individual. You are a number to them and the second you aren't what they're looking for, they will fire you and look for someone new. -Cannot trust what management says. Before I was laid off, I was told "The company is doing very well. No massive layoffs are coming." A week later, almost everyone on The Escapist was laid off. And then a few weeks later, myself and others on my team were laid off too.
