Pros

The hiring process was thorough, quick, and one of the best I’ve experienced to date. I was hired along with six other team members. I worked with some very talented, smart, and kind team members. I was promoted to one of the team leader positions within my first 90-100 days there.

Cons

The business is led by the whims of two YouTube personalities. They’ve built some great products but they’re stifling brand growth by second guessing their team and by keeping their hands in too many projects. Ego and a bro culture limit the potential of the company. Communication and long term planning are also areas for improvement.

UMZU Response

Hi, thank you so much for reaching out and providing your feedback. There have been a lot of learning curves over this last year. Yes, some of the founders are on YouTube and because they have historical insights and intuitions that have brought the company to this point, we continue to make sure that each goal or idea they bring forth is recognized and evaluated. We are optimizing our operational system every month and based on employee survey results it keeps getting better and better. Regarding a "bro culture," while the founders are all male, and friendships have developed across the company over time, we also have women in leadership and we pride ourselves on making work ethic a guiding factor, along with a commitment to excellence and core values, to determine who continues to rise in the organization; many of our longest-standing employees are, in fact, female. With respect to "ego" in the workplace, we are looking for the wisdom in your feedback as we keep coming back to the passion that our team displays when debating all data-driven ideas. The key to success is ensuring that the best ideas always win and that requires having team members who can effectively communicate with clear logic. That type of communication can be difficult for some people, but it is a requirement in order to protect the integrity of the team’s planning. We are sorry if it was challenging for you to work here. Working in this organization isn't for everyone.

Pros

Fair, competitive wages. Great benefits with coverage/eligibility that begins shortly after being hired (no waiting months or even a year to qualify for benefits like other warehouse have offered in my employment history). Large monthly allowance provided to employees to spend on UMZU supplements to improve their health. Fun company events throughout the year (bbq's, holiday parties, bowling, etc). Company-paid lunches are provided much more often than other companies I've worked for have offered their warehouse staff. Great PTO package with accrual beginning almost immediately. The company promotes from within, many warehouse employees have received promotions into new roles, inside and outside of the warehouse. The company offers profit-sharing bonuses with warehouse staff when sales goals are met throughout the year. The way this company treats its employees is truly incredible; you will feel valued and supported.

Cons

The company is still somewhat small and growth takes time, so those who hope to have opportunities for promotions and new positions will have to be patient. As can be expected of a company that sells products directly to consumers, sales spike from Black Friday up until Christmas, resulting in calendar black-outs for requests for time off/vacation during that time - not going to be ideal for employees who expect to take a vacation during the holiday season. These aren't exactly cons, as they would apply to most jobs of this type, regardless of the company.

Everything. This place has gone downhill since the new CEO took over. Stay away.
