Works well as a resume builder, but leadership fosters a toxic work environment - Anonymous employee TRACE International Employee Review

Pros

TRACE ticks several benefit boxes that make it appear as a good employer option on paper: flexible work schedule, good first-year PTO, great parental leave, monthly breakfast, free coffee, etc.

Cons

Where to begin. The CEO fancies herself a Silicon Valley-style startup founder, but often mistakes impulse for inspiration. Overreaction to less than ideal financials will often bring sudden, wide-sweeping changes, disrupting team dynamics and channels of communication. These changes are usually made at a distance, as Wrage travels to 40+ countries per year, staying at Four Seasons and Ritz-Carltons around the world. Not surprisingly, given these conditions, Wrage comes across as tone deaf and out-of-touch with rank and file workers in the Annapolis office. These changes include sudden firings which have a huge effect on employee morale. The current work environment can only be described as one of paranoia and morale is significantly lower than in previous years. It seemed like not a month went by in 2018 without someone being let go, hastily escorted to the exit, not allowed to say good-byes, followed a couple hours later by an email announcement wishing them well. In an office of about 60 people, turnover has been astronomical. In response to an employee question about turnover at a recent company meeting, Wrage quoted a slightly-above industry-average turnover percentage. My own research of org charts and email archives, which include all hiring and firing announcements, indicated inaccuracies (deception?) in her answer and a higher true figure (significantly higher when only counting managers). One employee was fired two weeks before Christmas and their replacement started the next day. To me, there’s no clearer way for the company to communicate that they do not care about employees. Wrage acts paranoid of her own employees and has a hair trigger on firings. It’s impossible to feel secure in your job at TRACE, and loyalty to TRACE goes largely unnoticed and unrewarded. Lastly, Wrage asked current employees to counter recent negative Glassdoor reviews with positive ones. The results are the two recent positive reviews that are even worded as responses, one with no cons listed, the other with a “con that’s not really a con.” Some skepticism about these positive reviews is advised. They were solicited.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I appreciate that, as a current employee, you highlight TRACE’s flexible work schedule, good PTO, great parental leave and monthly breakfasts. I also appreciate you noting that “TRACE has grown and has been successful.” I won’t address your very personal comments about the CEO, but will note that she does indeed travel a great deal. She—and all employees attending TRACE events—stay at whichever hotel is hosting our event for the sake of convenience and because our events team is usually able to get a favorable rate. Human Resources maintains the statistics about employee turnover, the CEO doesn’t track those. For reasons of privacy, we don’t address any employee’s record with the larger group and so the team does not, and should not, have insight into the history of each. As a current employee, you will know that the amount of PTO is, and the recent “tenure bonus” was, tied to each employee’s years with TRACE and reflect an effort by the company to reward loyalty, contrary to your point that loyalty is neither noticed nor rewarded. Finally, Glassdoor policy states that companies should encourage employees to leave honest, candid reviews. We’ve done this, during exit interviews and at intervals, for several years.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We love our location and team too! In response to the cons listed, we pride ourselves on providing employees with a healthy work-life balance. The majority of our team works remotely, and we do not authorize overtime, so we would hope that no one feels overworked. TRACE's President and leadership team do travel a great deal for work, to speak at key international events where they represent TRACE and our member companies and advocate for more robust anti-corruption efforts. It’s not clear why the President’s travel schedule would anger anyone as our whole team is permitted to work remotely and our President is always available even while traveling, but it is true that there are very few opportunities for more junior employees to travel. For local events, we do our best to invite as many employees as possible.
