Undeniably a good resume line but sometimes a frustrating job - Head of Department Swissnex Boston Employee Review

Pros

Ability to engage with interesting US and Swiss partners, self-identified projects, lots of opportunities to network, very unusual work experience that stands out in a resume, lots of visibility. This is not a long-term job but is a great stepping stone for a lot of different career moves, especially if you are someone who likes to meet new people.

Cons

Low wages and no room for advancement, many evening events (pre-Covid), doesn't follow US/Massachusetts labor laws or withhold US taxes so quite tricky for US citizens, mostly early career individuals (including the CEO) so leadership is shaky, lots of turnover, questionable Covid policies, exposure to a lot of sexism and ageism from Switzerland (old boys club feel).

Pros

An international work environment, the opportunity to sometimes meet very interesting partners and to learn about cool projects at Swiss institutions.

Cons

Truly, I have never written a review of an employer on one of these sites before. But wow, where to begin. There is virtually no order or structure, which at first can be freeing, but ultimately leads to chaos, confusion, and frustration. There is no guiding vision, leadership, camaraderie, or recognition of achievement. It was difficult to see people regularly treated poorly. In some cases, it bordered on abusive behavior towards at least 2-3 employees. Looking back at the experience, I am mostly left scratching my head and wishing I had left sooner. Compensation is disappointing, especially if you're Swiss but I hear the Americans have to pay heavy taxes too.
