Pros

Respected by, and tremendous support from community. Volunteers care deeply. Many beautiful animals. They eventually will have a new facility. Strong vaccination program for the animals. Board is strong.

Cons

Very disorganized and unresponsive internally and externally to developing and implementing a cohesive plan to sustain the work of the organization. Many staff have left and the leaders that are left behind provide no support to highly qualified people within the organization. I appreciate not being micromanaged, but this place has little to no management at the senior level providing support or guidance with high expectations and finger pointing when expectations are not met. I've never worked in a place that had so much backstabbing and gossiping that came from leadership . Creates an environment of every person for themselves. Current building is old and lacks a cooling system for the animals. Some animal areas are overcrowded. Pay is low for the skills they request and be sure to question the accuracy of the job/benefit descriptions (not as outlined in my case).

Pros

Spending time with the animals if possible/allowed was great. Being able to engage with community members and partners was great.

Cons

Head of organization does not care about the community or its own staff, volunteers and donors. The working culture is beyond unhealthy. Staff is overworked, underpaid and not appreciated. Volunteers see what's happening and are glad they are not employed by SHS. Kennels and cages are filled with animals to the max to impress major donors when asking for financial assistance; and without having enough staff and volunteers to properly care fo the animals. In other words, hoarding. When staff members make decisions to leave, they are given the silent treatment, and treated like dirt under a shoe. Would not recommend, unless major changes in current leadership are made.
