High turnover for a reason - Anonymous St Michaels Resort Employee Review

Pros

Some members of staff are genuinely lovely, and deserve far better. Free lunch for daytime staff and dinner for evening staff. Gym membership, although some facilities require extra payment.

Cons

St Michaels Resort is easily the most toxic workplace I have ever experienced. There is a blatant culture of favouritism, with different rules for different teams and different people. The version sold at interview is nothing like the reality. Once you are actually there, it becomes obvious that the business is disorganised, under-supported and badly managed. Management is the worst part. There is very little respect for staff, and some managers seem to believe rules do not apply to them. It is hard not to resent watching management take extended breaks while others are expected to work through lunch, eat at their desks and stay late. Pay is poor and benefits are minimal. No sick pay beyond statutory, minimum holiday allowance, and no working from home for any reason. The few benefits that do exist sound far better on paper than they are in practice. Small discounts on a luxury resort mean very little to staff on low wages. There is also a strong culture of control. Flexibility does not exist, trust is lacking, and staff are treated with suspicion rather than respect. The atmosphere is tense, oppressive and often openly hostile. Morale is extremely low and turnover is extremely high, which says everything. Instead of asking why staff are so unhappy, management seems more interested in blaming those who have already left for the company’s wider failings.

Pros

Amazing benefits (free use of space, discounts etc) People are wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable

Cons

- Very short staffed! Owners know this but won’t hire more people due to budgets - effects the current staffs morale/energy levels and greatly affects the quality of service which the staff then have to deal with complaints etc - Poor communication across the whole resort, between management and staff, between different departments etc - Training should be longer, more thorough and more structured - Full time contract is only 32 hours and it’s hard to get holiday sometimes (because they are so short staffed) - Facilities are outdated and need a lot of maintenance - Very strict sickness policy - management and HR will give you warnings and infer that your job is at stake and discreetly threaten to let you go if it happens again (including cases of genuine sickness that can’t be helped eg covid, ear infections, food poisoning, tooth infections, flu etc)

Pros

Great access to spa and gym when you work there. Everyday there’s something different. Lovely team

Cons

Understaffed when busy and very tired. Can be very laborious too with the laundry when you have to do it alone
