Pros

- There are so many amazing projects going on and you’ll build up a great portfolio - Great first game dev job to get your foot in the door as they hire pretty easily - The people are the best, they’re so friendly and lovely to be around - The work is really fun and rewarding

Cons

- Upper management are very strict and have a top down management style. They seem to a have a ‘give them an inch and they’ll take a mile’ approach to management - Middle management seems to be chosen based on whether they will just be a yes man for upper management or not - Anyone other than management are treated like children. They aren’t trusted and are micromanaged - Silence culture. Negative feedback will be welcomed but will later be used against you, this happened to me and I’ve since learned that at Sprung this is a “well practiced art”. They say they want feedback but it seems like they’re just trying to weed out people who aren’t the yes men they’re looking for. Many have just stopped giving feedback due to realising this - No progression system and you will be punished for saying you want to progress - Favouritism, some seem to be able to get away with anything while others are very closely watched for mistakes - A lack of transparency around unsavoury topics, and a culture of trying to make it seem like everything is happy and good even when it’s not. People are punished for not being happy and told they are the outliers when it isn’t true - HR have no idea how to speak to or empathise with people, and have been given full power to do whatever they want unquestioned - An overemphasis on loyalty, and taking it very personally when employees choose to leave because they feel it isn’t a right fit for them

Thank you for your detailed review of your experience at our company. We appreciate your honesty and the time you've taken to share both positive and negative aspects of your time with us. We take all feedback seriously and would like to discuss your points. Regarding the concerns you've raised regarding Sprung Studios' management style and leadership, the role of leadership is to set the standards, provide clear direction to our employees, and ensure that expectations and support are given to ensure we're fostering a positive and collaborative environment. At Sprung Studios, we select our managers based on their leadership skills and ability to support their teams and company goals. The suggestion that Sprung Studios chooses our managers based on anything other than their skillset and ability does not reflect our best practice approach to equal employment hiring practices. The comments around micro-management and finding every mistake are essential to note. In our fast-paced client-facing Production/co-development environment, tasks are planned and tracked to a half-day granularity. Our Producers directly surface this information to the teams we work with. Keeping track of what is intended is a crucial part of AAA game development at this scale. To maintain progress and, more importantly, quality - deviations or errors introduced while executing these tasks must always be addressed and subsequently corrected. Sprung Studios supports continuous feedback. We strive for transparency and value honest input from all team members. Our commitment to this is reflected in several key practices: - Regular 1:1 Meetings: We encourage frequent one-on-one discussions between employees and their managers to provide a safe space for open dialogue and feedback. - Mid-Year Check-ins: We structure discussions with employees and HR every six months to open a dialogue for feedback and continuous improvement at the studio. - Annual Reviews: We implement a structured goal-setting process where employees can voice their aspirations and concerns, ensuring alignment between individual and company objectives. - Open Door Policy: Our leadership team maintains an open door policy, inviting employees to discuss any issues or ideas directly with management. Our progression and promotion structure is designed to support employee growth and development. Each department has its own evaluating structure that allows for specialized feedback and supports progression through its tailored approach to individual employee's goal-setting and career development. The managers play an important role in this process, overseeing their teams' skills by providing support and mentorship, offering regular feedback, and tracking progress. This process ensures that we create clear career paths for all employees and their progression. We're committed to fair treatment, diversity, and inclusion as an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. Our HR team is trained in empathetic communication and operates under established policies. While the HR department has the authority to make decisions, it does not operate unchecked. It is accountable to Company Leadership and must adhere to company policies, legal requirements, and HR governing guidelines to support its best-practice approach. While we value employee retention, we understand that career paths may diverge. We focus on creating a positive work environment with work-life balance, engaging projects, and loyalty perks for tenured employees. In response to ‘Advice to Management’: Feedback Culture: We acknowledge your concerns about our approach to feedback. However, we value and uphold that our organization champions an open feedback environment where all input is valued and acted upon. Accountability: We agree that admitting mistakes and learning from them is crucial for employee and manager growth. We foster a culture where transparency and accountability are prioritized at all levels. Valuing Employees: We agree that our people are our greatest asset. We're committed to creating an environment where all employees feel valued and have opportunities for growth and development. Employee Satisfaction: We appreciate your suggestions about small gestures (like the WFH day example). However, our policies around WFH are in place to ensure we're making decisions that are fair and aligned with the guidelines. Management Training: Your suggestion for external management training is already a part of our structure, and we will continue to implement comprehensive training programs for all levels of management. Workplace Culture: We understand the importance of fostering a positive, honest work environment, which is our philosophy. Mental Health Awareness: Our HR is trained to handle employees' private health information with a best-practice approach. They take the utmost care to provide a psychologically safe workspace that allows employees to feel supported and protected by their confidential information. Exit Interviews: We value the feedback from departing employees and will ensure that exit interviews are offered and conducted professionally for all leaving staff who follow the guidelines and procedures. We welcome the opportunity to discuss these points further. Please contact us at hr@sprungstudios.com if you'd like to discuss your review in further detail. Thank you again for your feedback, and know that Sprung Studios is dedicated to making our company a better place to work for everyone.

Pros

Sprung Studios has always prioritized its employees. Whether it's learning and development, inclusivity, support, or celebrating accomplishments, Sprung always prioritizes employee satisfaction, no matter the company's size. The company has grown drastically over the last five years, but despite this growth, the enjoyment and daily satisfaction of working here have not shifted. The work completed and the team you work alongside daily is always so refreshing and uplifting. It's a pleasure to work on what I must say are the top games in the world developed by a top UX/UI studio that I am proud to work for. The work expectations are clear, the salary is competitive, the benefits are excellent, and the support structure is phenomenal. This is truly a great place to work and I am forever grateful for the opportunities I have had here and the opportunities I look forward to.

Cons

I can't think of any.

Creating an environment where employees feel valued, supported and excited about their work is a top priority for us and it’s great to know that this is reflected in your experience. Your feedback about the senior leadership visit is greatly appreciated - as always, we loved the opportunity to connect with the team in the Brighton studio. Thanks again for being a part of Sprung Studios. We’re grateful for your contributions and excited for what’s ahead!

Pros

Great foot-in-the-door opportunity Great quality of work and understanding of UX/UI design requirements across the industry Great people Studio trips (sometimes) No crunch

Cons

Very clear favouritism across the board with heavy differences in treatment received between the Brighton vs Vancouver studios (with the latter being heavily favoured and looked after better by the CEO) Gender pay gap (compensation and benefits in general severely lacking) Lack of recognition to hard-working people, especially women A certain member of the senior team is essentially allowed to put in minimal effort without ever being questioned and gets away with acting in a very unprofessional manner way too often. Production in general felt like the most troubling department to work with; they seem to push for pleasing clients more than protecting their own teams from being overworked Certain other department heads equally unprofessional, especially towards female members of the team Senior management allows clients to verbally disrespect Sprung employees without batting an eyelid It was admitted by a senior member of staff that pay rises are not earned for working hard, but rather for loyalty (so just staying longer at the company; performance doesn't matter)

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We value all perspectives as they help us improve. However, we were disheartened to read about your experience, which doesn’t align with our organisational values and the experiences we provide our employees. Therefore, it is essential to address some inaccuracies in your review. Regarding the alleged discrepancy between offices, we assure you that all our locations operate under the same standards and policies and strive to maintain consistency across all locations. While our offices are in different places, such as Brighton, UK, and Vancouver, Canada, we treat all our staff equally, no matter their office. Fairness and equity are the foundation of our company's operations. We have robust policies in place to ensure fair compensation practices regardless of gender, such as our banding structure. Regular audits are conducted to address any discrepancies, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to equity in all aspects of our business. We also provide a range of benefits to support our employees' well-being, including private health care, well-being days, and a hybrid work model with additional work-from-home days. Our company conducts salary reviews that inform our pay banding structure to ensure all our salaries are competitive and in range with all departments. Performance reviews occur annually, and pay increases are received in alignment with our banding. We recognize loyalty at the organisation with annual bonuses and loyalty bonuses. Recognition is a pillar of our culture, and we actively celebrate the contributions of all team members. From peer-to-peer recognition to formal awards, we strive to ensure that every employee feels valued and appreciated for their hard work and dedication. We take professionalism seriously, and unprofessional behaviour is addressed promptly through our established HR processes. Our company culture emphasizes respect, integrity, and collaboration, and we hold ourselves and our employees to the highest standards. Our employees' well-being is a top priority for us. We have a core value of 'no crunch time' and mechanisms in place to monitor workloads and prevent overworking. We actively encourage open communication to address any concerns about workload imbalance. This is facilitated through regular one-to-ones with employees and their managers, mid-year check-ins with HR, and annual reviews throughout the year. We want every employee to feel supported and empowered to succeed in a positive work environment. We have zero tolerance for disrespectful behaviour, whether from clients or employees. Any instances of misconduct are thoroughly investigated and addressed in accordance with our policies and procedures, which are set out in our Employee Handbook. We understand that individual experiences may vary, and we encourage you to contact HR or management directly to address any concerns. We are committed to fostering a positive work environment where every employee feels supported and empowered to succeed. While it's unfortunate that this employee wasn't satisfied with their experience at Sprung Studios, we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
