Nice work environment, though a bit exploitative of young workers - Program Assistant Social Science Research Council Employee Review

Pros

Really friendly, collegial environment, lots of people very interested in research and ideas, overall pleasant place to work

Cons

I think they may have increased salaries after I left, but when I was there the model seemed to be to take in smart college grads who were interested in research and pay them almost nothing, knowing that most people were going to leave after a few years for grad school. The work itself varied a lot by program, some was more substantive and some was more administrative/menial. Overall felt a bit exploitative of young people eager to find an academic-y job right out of college

Pros

- Excellent PTO package - Good health insurance (but you have to pay into it) - Wonderful, smart, supportive colleagues, including many at the program-director level - Management makes an effort to contribute to staff professional development (occasional trainings + some professional development funds) and cohesiveness/wellbeing (outings, arts and crafts, parties, etc) - Very good organizational reputation to support your next steps

Cons

- Unrealistically low salaries for program assistants/associates living in New York City (unfortunately, even the best PTO can't make up for this if you’re trying to pay off loans or similar) - very few opportunities to network or learn from more senior colleagues outside your team - few opportunities for advancement, partly due to the structure of the organization
