Pros

I have school aged children and this job enables me to work from home, schedule my own time and keep my own hours. This is key with a busy family. Although I am full time, I am able to work my hours during times when I don't have kids at home or when they are asleep, and still get the job done, well. I am still available to attend my kids' events and pick up a sick kid, should the need arise. Even in those instances, I don't have to miss work. I would not have that flexibility with a traditional firm. I answer emails, attend hearings, and keep the phone with me during the day to answer calls, but a lot of my drafting is done during off hours. As long as the work is done on time and I show up for in person or telephone events as required, I have a lot of flexibility. Pay is good and I set my own schedule. Ideal for someone who has one foot in family life, yet still wants to practice law 40 hours per week. This job is literally a dream come true for someone with my lifestyle. This is a great place to work, and management is not what has been described in other reviews. I have found them to be very easy to work with.

Cons

Paid as contractor - taxes are very high. I don't want benefits, but would appreciate employee status for the tax break. Also, the lack of in person contact makes it very hard to relate to people. This job is very solitary because we are working from home and doing most everything on the phone or over email. I rely a lot of my paralegal and the others who work in my state, but we have phone relationships only. I think a once a year firm retreat with some training classes and the opportunity to socialize with colleagues would go a long way. I would love to meet my paralegal, the partners, and those I work with most and get to know them, even if it's just for a day or two.
