Pros
-Amazing opportunity to serve students, build relationships, and grow as a tutor and mentor -SAGA has a strong but not overly intense organizational culture -Working with a team keeps work energized and provides opportunity for lots of collaboration and support through any emotionally difficult aspects of working with students. -Strong, inspiring leadership in site directors and program directors who are committed to tutor development and consistent feedback -Agency in choosing school location/supervisor
Cons
-You could certainly make more money working as a private tutor, but the real value of working at SAGA is improving educational outcomes for students in Chicago Public Schools that need tutoring but might not seek it out outside of school and may not be able to afford private tutoring. -SAGA has not implemented much at all in the way of cultural competency training. Though a tutor's familiarity and willingness to work in low income communities of color is a pretty important component of the interview process, it has not carried a sustained conversation. I know SAGA is making efforts to change this and implement training for the 2018-2019 school year.
