Poor work life balance:
- This is high volume consulting work, that is highly detailed. To really do a good job, 45-50 hours should be expected on average; sometimes more. So, most people only take a 1-2 days of vacation at a time, spread out over the year.
- Many of the teams work (independently) a bit on weekends; someone’s green light is always on in Microsoft Teams. So, it’s not practical to take time off.
- There is a “volunteer” on-call emergency overnight team, for helping find the owner of wires that have fallen on railroad tracks, or pipe issues affecting the tracks, so that workers in the field can coordinate with the utility owners and resolve it. This could be a great fit if you have been a first responder before, are a night owl, or like working nights; but, probably not if you have a family, have activities going on outside of work, if you like separation from work, or if you prioritize sleep.
