Pros
Rancho Bernardo office is beautiful. Employee cafeteria is on the 10th floor with a view to the ocean. Level 6, the Sony gym, is 100% subsidized and right on top of the parking garage, it's beautiful. In general the engineers are good to work with. Will pay for some people to go to offsite training, but the paperwork to get approval is outrageous. Fantastic relocation package. Decent profit sharing. (annual bonus)
Cons
Management won't allow upgrades of the technology even when it would benefit the bottom line. Up until this year they used C++98, a 21 year old compiler. (They moved to C++11) Claims to move projects to JAVA or at least micro services but never actually starts those projects. Sony back end services moved to AWS but won't allow teams to use the AWS suites without major reviews by "architecture team." Claims to have a sandbox area for engineers to experiment in, but it's so locked down nothing actually can run there. Low level management has no clue how to run a team. Mid level management spends 110% of their time in meetings. Upper management puts out great "Dream of a new company" speeches but doesn't move the company fast enough. Playstation 5 will be the last set top box and then the companies profit line is going to tank as cloud competitors eat their lunch. Says they don't do stack level ranking but they do. Performance reviews have almost noting to do with actual work performed.
