Pros

A career as a financial advisor can be incredibly rewarding, offering the potential for a great income, tremendous flexibility in your schedule, and the ability to deeply impact people's lives. One of the biggest benefits this career has afforded me is access to knowledge around financial planning, tax, investing, and insurance strategies that I would not have been aware of otherwise. It's given me the chance to sit in rooms with exceptionally brilliant and successful people, and has supported my personal and professional entrepreneurial journey. From other advisors to my clients, I've been exposed to all sorts of ways people have become successful, and I've been able to identify patterns common among those who truly excel in their careers. This career has allowed us to grow our personal wealth and income, affording us a far better than average life. Pacific Advisors provides the autonomy to build your own practice along with consistent training, ongoing support, access to subject matter experts, and a community of colleagues to collaborate with on business growth.

Cons

The reality of the financial services business, whether on the insurance or investment side, is that it is very difficult to get started. You are talking with people about something extremely intimate — their money — and not just in terms of dollars and cents, but the emotions surrounding it. This is a high failure rate business. With perseverance you can build something meaningful; without it, you won't make it. The most important trait someone can have coming into this business is to be coachable and have a willingness to learn. That is a necessity. The world has also become exceedingly more complex, and the knowledge necessary to properly coach people through their financial affairs is truly extensive. For someone who is not dedicated to continuing education, diligent study, and strategic thinking, it will be very hard to provide the level of planning that clients deserve. That said, for those willing to go the extra mile, this same complexity opens up tremendous opportunity.

Pros

I transitioned from being a business owner to entering the financial and life insurance industry as a full-time agent a few years ago. To be honest, my first two years were not easy at all. However, I never even considered giving up. Instead, I continued to learn from the top producers at my agency, as well as from others within the Guardian Life network. I attended in-person training sessions provided by Guardian Life once or twice each year, where I was taught how to approach entrepreneurs, given the significant business opportunities they present. Consequently, I gradually transitioned from helping individuals to serving entrepreneurs and their employees. I am proud to have qualified as a Leaders Club council member (The top 100 financial professionals) for three years in a row. I also became registered a while ago, allowing me to sell a variety of variable products, such as registered index-linked annuity, mutual funds and 529 education plans and even handle 401(k) rollovers for small businesses. I will soon begin studying for my Series 65 to become a financial advisor! What I love about this profession is the flexibility; the work-life balance is truly the best part. When I first started this career, I used to work more than 50 hours a week, but I am now fortunate enough to work no more than 40 hours per week. Since I persist and focus on what I do, I've been incredibly rewarding for a minimum of 10-15% increase for my annual income. Most importantly, as a career changer, I chose to join a team as a full-time financial professional rather than becoming an independent broker. This decision has allowed me to receive invaluable support from my team members.

Cons

This job is “Eat What You Kill”

Thank you for sharing such an honest and inspiring reflection on your journey into this profession - and by setting the example of what excellence looks like! We’re especially grateful you shared why choosing to join a team made such a difference. The support, collaboration, and shared knowledge within a team environment are powerful advantages, particularly for career changers entering the industry. You also said something beautifully honest: this is an “eat what you kill” profession. That’s true. And as you’ve demonstrated, for those who stay focused, put in the work, and continue learning, the flexibility, work-life balance, and financial rewards can be incredibly fulfilling. Thank you for being such a thoughtful example of what’s possible in this career.
