Pros

The biggest pro is definitely the people. You get to work with some incredible people who go above and beyond for their jobs. There are some aspects of the culture that are truly unique and make people want to be here. However, those cultural aspects are quickly fading and no amount of happy hours, summer retreats, and office drinking will be able to mask the many underlying issues NewsCred is facing.

Cons

There are many cons but they can all be connected back to one overarching issue - Best advice I could give someone coming to work here is it really doesn't matter how good you are at your job. Spend less time learning how to do your job and more time trying to work yourself into the inner circle. I have read the earlier reviews and thought the mention of office politics, "frat" vibes and cliques were a thing of the past, but they are not and never will be. I have heard Shafqat be "shocked" to learn they are going on and adamantly deny that they are happening, meanwhile he is the ringleader. It is his way or the highway so you better be on the same page as him. One of the things that used to make NewsCred so great was the difference of opinions and being able to challenge the status quo. This, sadly, doesn't happen anymore and decisions are now made by Shafqat and his inner circle who he relies on far too much. The problem isn't that the CEO is making decisions for his company, that is normal and expected, the problem is who is consulting when making them. He is consulting the employees who play golf with him on the weekends, get drinks with him, and tell him how great he is which is obviously not the vast majority of the company. If you have a stable job that you like, don't leave it for a chance here. It is not worth it, unless of course you manage to work yourself into the power clique.

Pros

The company culture at NewsCred is incredible. While working here, everyone I interacted with (both on my team, software engineering, and in other roles) was passionate, dedicated, and truly loved the company and believed in it! Lots of talent and if you are a younger software engineer like me, you will learn a lot from patient coworkers who are eager to provide help and constructive criticism so that you can grow as a software engineer. The company leadership is also superb...the CEO is incredibly smart, dynamic, and a down-to-earth nice guy! When I decided to leave for health reasons and for a fresh start, I got nothing but support and kindness. Seriously, if you are considering applying or accepting a job here, stop considering and just do it. You won't regret it, and it might be the best decision of your career. Such fond feelings for this place! As for benefits: good salary (on par with top tech companies), stock options, health/dental/life insurance, performance based bonuses, insurance, unlimited vacation (unlike some places, the unlimited vacation doesn't deter people from taking occasional time off...I know some companies say "unlimited" and mean "none", but NewsCred isn't like this, they just expect you to be professional and understand what is appropriate), office snacks, lunch on Fridays (from great NYC area restaurants), fun NewsCred events and outings, weekly happy hours, casual dress...I could probably keep going and going! Great benefits! :-)

Cons

The only con I could possibly think of is that the 401k plan could be better. However, the company may soon be offering 401k matching, so that's a plus.
