Pros
KHS has a wonderful mission and is full of hard working, dedicated people. They do a lot for the animals in the community and rural areas of the state with transport partners, spay/neuter clinic/low-cost vet clinic and multiple adoption locations around the city. They are constantly growing and adapting to the needs of the community. If you can patiently wait out the low paying positions they do offer a lot of promotion from within and most positions have several levels of growth opportunity.
Cons
KHS houses and helps thousands of animals every year but yet they are not staffed anywhere near what is needed to be a progressive shelter or provide ultimate care for the animals and people they serve or their staff. Other shelters that compare in size and programs have at least twice the staff of KHS. Staff have more duties than they can manage because of this and they get easily burnt out and stressed so turnover is high. The pay is low on almost all levels except upper management, especially in comparison to the workload.
