If you look for work & passionate about doing it, one can explore things he wants. The organization is liberal to let you work on your own things (of course, in the interest of organization) apart from your regular work.
Cons
The only limiting factor to above theory is that; by & large, you get carried away with your day to day activities & since your seniors asks for activities reports every now & then; you end up in thinking about current activities only.
