Pros

I sort of fell into Health Catalyst when it was still a startup, and it has been one of the best things in my life. While my spouse has had some employment issues, my work at Health Catalyst has not only remained consistent, but I have received many raises throughout my years here. The benefits package is comprehensive. I have had some major health concerns over the last six months, and it has been such a relief to discover just how well it has all been covered by my medical insurance. The benefits alone are a major reason I would have to really seriously consider a job change. I also enjoy the flexible work schedule, especially in this time of COVID. I've been able to spend time focusing on my family and my health when needed without feeling like I'm completely letting my team down and without any feelings of ill will from my manager or teammates. The mission is also a main reason I enjoy working here. The work we're doing is important, and we are making a real difference at healthcare organizations and in the healthcare industry.

Cons

There have been some definite growing pains in my time at Health Catalyst. There have been some benefits that have changed, and not always for the better, as the company has grown and gone public. It's been a little hard to see some of those things go away, though I understand why. I've also struggled some with career growth opportunities. It feels like most of the opportunities go to those who work directly with healthcare clients or in the technical side of the company, and as someone who works more on the operational side of things, I've felt like I haven't had as many opportunities to advance my career at the company. To be fair, I'm not a particularly ambitious person, but it's been a bit hard to see where my particular skillset can take me within the organization. The quick growth and change in product offerings has also made it difficult for me to do my job at times. The communication about various products and the people who have developed them hasn't been great. The company has various places where content is stored, and sifting through it all or even knowing where to look is difficult.

Pros

Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
