Pros
Kind, respectful, knowledgeable managers and fellow booksellers, excellent teachers and teammates all. Excellent business model, promoting literacy, community, and environmentally-friendly retail. Great hours, for retail. Extraordinarily conscientious scheduling (both daily and weekly). Managers earn respect of booksellers through patient, respectful training and responsiveness to bookseller concerns.
Cons
Pay is embarrassingly low, given the pace and complexity of bookseller shift work and the knowledge and experience (and skill sets) required to do this work efficiently and effectively. The work itself is challenging in all kinds of rewarding and fulfilling ways, though, so it’s worth it!
