Pros

The benefits are very good (health insurance, retirement, vacation/sick leave). Mission-driven work where you can feel that you are making a contribution to important public health/social science research. Some teams are a good group-oriented work environment. Opportunities to work with and learn from highly talented staff.

Cons

Career progression is sometimes stifled, particularly for junior level staff from minority/underrepresented groups. The organization markets itself as diverse and inclusive, but in reality, some staff (especially minorities) may feel undervalued and disrespected. The culture can be quite performative at times, smiles don't always mean they're on your side. It requires a certain level of emotional intelligence and emotional resilience to handle office politics.

Pros

Health insurance benefits are top notch- very affordable and covers everything under the sun. Can’t rave enough about our insurance plans. Other great benefits too- free CitiBike, free Duolingo, commuter subsidy, paid disability leave, lots of PTO, great 401k match. So many staff members are kind, caring, and friendly, and you’ll work alongside so many brilliant and mission driven colleagues. Flexible hybrid schedule for almost all staff (8 days per month of your choosing). Unionized workplace with a contract in place. The work is interesting and inspiring and really important.

Cons

Benefits are great, but salaries for staff below the Director and VP levels are mediocre at best. Not much room for advancement or promotions (or salary increases at that), professional development opportunities tend to be few and far between. Lots of brilliant scientists and policy and comms folks, but doesn’t mean they’re brilliant supervisors or cut out for people management- it’s much better workplace when you’re lucky enough to end up with a good supervisor (has been ongoing problem for years). Lots of leadership changes over last few years- some are very good and positive and much anticipated changes, but other changes are needed and have been needed for years- the growth of the Institute and staff retention rates will continue to suffer until bad apples leave.
