Exceptional team, untrustworthy leadership - Senior Software Engineer Garner Health Technology Employee Review

Pros

The people I worked with every day were genuinely some of the best I've encountered; all very sharp, kind, and hardworking. The bar is high, and the engineering and product teams rise to meet it. If you're someone who thrives in a high-performance environment and wants to be surrounded by people who take their craft seriously, you will definitely find that here.

Cons

My criticism is directed at the executive level, not the rest of the org. - Layoffs happen without warning, even when the business appears to be doing extremely well. There were no PIPs or performance conversations. Just a sudden decision with no accountability. - Leadership churn around the CEO is also something worth paying attention to. People who get close to him tend not to last more than a year or two. - Major organizational changes happen without much transparency or lead time. Messaging shifts frequently. - Finally, as a healthcare company, the lack of empathy (from the top) is striking. But it's also not something they claim to have; it's not one of their core values, which is an intentional choice.

Pros

-A lot has changed at Garner in the last several years, for the better. There used to be a huge culture of micromanagement from the top down, and now that we’ve grown larger that has shifted -High value product with a ton of growth potential that’s actually making a difference -really great peers who are ambitious and mission-driven -good salaries -lots of opportunity if you like to build and iterate -interesting ever changing work -management that really cares about me

Cons

Your experience at Garner really depends on your department. Some work you to the bone, some have weak leadership, others are great. Working directly with the CEO is tough as he is more of a micromanager. My team doesn’t happen to have that issue or a work life balance issue so much, so my experience has generally been good. - low diversity, likes to recruit from consulting firms too much -if you aren’t efficient or don’t use the tools available, work life balance will suffer
