Pros

Fastenal promotes from within and there are great people you meet throughout both at the branch level and also your product distribution.there are definite places where you enjoy the aspects of team work. You definitely get to learn about small business approach and how to explain the value of your service to your customers. Any time at Fastenal will prepare you for just about anywhere else, with regards to developing a business mindset and learning about growing your business and the particular details that go into making a business happen and all the behind the scenes operations. If you want a challenging career then just about any position in fastenal will do.

Cons

You work like a business owner but you don't get paid like one. You work hard and it seems that your never get to be truly rewarded. Like any sales organisation you are only as good as your latest numbers. There is an unhealthy spirit of competition which oftentimes erodes the perception of team work. You have to want things here none will offer to teach. If you can't get things down quickly then expect to held into account for that. Upper level management are more concerned with the numbers than they are with you. You are only as good as your numbers. So even if you had a great sales this month and you sink the next month you will be questioned and your loyalty, drive and assertiveness will be questioned. There is no focus on personnel development. When you don't live up unrealistic expectations then your longevity at the company is questioned

Pros

I like my coworkers and my GM is a good .

Cons

The business model and lean staffing is simply unsustainable. Entry level pay, part time, little training, no commissions. Fastenal is focused on the sale rather than the customer. The wing it mentatility leaves customer service lacking. It's a roll coaster of putting one fire out after the other. They sale the position during the interview process but after your in there's empty promises with no real timelines for when the advancement is coming. Upper management seems out of touch with the day to day business. If you ask for help they simply say you have a good schedule. It's extremely disappointing that it has turned out this way because I was excited about the prospect of becoming an Account manager.
