Barking up the wrong tree - Social Media and Community Manager Embark Veterinary Employee Review

Pros

I will forever value the relationships I made here. Embark was the place to be in 2020, and the remaining employees are top notch: friendly, affable, and incredibly smart. I am grateful to have worked with them. My direct manager, the CMO, and the marketing team were wonderful to work with. Medical benefits are good.

Cons

Embark no longer knows what it is or wants to be. I was drawn to the Embark for its mission— who wouldn’t love working to better canine health? Over the last year, that mission has clouded. Science and discovery have been deprioritized; unsubstantiated products have been rushed in the name of money. Top leaders have jumped ship. This is no longer a mission-oriented company, though you will be told otherwise should you interview. Profit, of course, is at the heart of any business, but Embark isn’t making much. We had three rounds of layoffs in the last calendar year, and there has been a marked culture shift with each one. Most employees are looking for their next gig as they have taken on the responsibilities of the “eliminated” roles without additional comp.

Pros

Embark is an incredible place to work! You get to dive into a variety of projects, and the team is extremely tight-knit, fostering real opportunities for growth. Your voice is heard, and people genuinely value new ideas. Everyone is hardworking, open-minded, and excited to take on challenges—it truly feels like a family (or a dog pack!). The perks of working for a dog-focused company speak for themselves—who doesn’t love dogs? Plus, the benefits are excellent, with great healthcare, work-from-home flexibility, and an office in Boston for those who prefer in-person collaboration.

Cons

The office space is on the smaller side, but with the shift toward remote work, it’s been a smart and natural transition. The previous larger space wasn’t necessary for how the company operates now.

Pros

The team is genuinely passionate about helping pet parents understand and care for their dogs.

Cons

The CEO creates a toxic culture. He frequently gossips about his direct reports behind their backs and even to their more junior team members. This has created constant and significant churn among the executive team which leads to paralysis in the organization. The company is in a negative growth spiral and there is no coherent plan to correct it.
