Pros
Emergency calls, flexible scheduling, lots of available over-time, independent work environment.
Cons
Low pay, paramedics shouldn't be making only $24 an hour. 2022 hourly pay scale: EMR: $16 EMT: $17.50 Paramedic: $24 CCT-Paramedic: $28 Minimal paid time off, which only starts after a year of full-time employment. After working full time for a year, all you get is 40 hours of PTO. After 4 years of full-time employment, PTO maxes out at 120 hours. Unused PTO doesn't roll over. No power loaders, even for ALS and CCT ambulances. Frequently held over our scheduled off time, up to two hours late after 12 hour or 13 hour shifts, which is hard when you have to be back to work the next morning for another 13 hours.
