Pros

They have a great idea/product but just goes to show how ideas are cheap and account for about just 10% of your company

Cons

I was with EMAGIN since it’s early days so here’s a review of my experience there. There are way too many cons about this company so here are a few points summarized: - Immature Leadership - this probably one of the biggest red flags about this place. I’ve been at places where leadership has been good and sometimes mediocre but saying they have poor leadership here would be an understatement. The co-founders are way over their heads with neither of them having any real-world experience of working in professional settings or even running a business. They lack the skills, maturity and decency to be leaders. I’ve even heard one of the cofounders say “If anyone challenges my thinking, I just fire them”. They actually take pleasure in firing people. - Lying Culture - another a huge con that began to surface as I began to work at the company. Their leadership has no problem lying to investors, customers, stakeholders, mentors and above all, their own team. There were scenarios where they asked employees to do illegal activities like providing misinformation to even the government. They’ve even taken data from an existing client to show it to another potential customer without the existing client’s consent. Anyone who stands up against of these actions or even questions it, or gotten rid of. Their lying is so bad that I wouldn’t even be surprised that the reviews below are done by the founders themselves just to boost the company’s rating on Glassdoor. - Lack Of Human Decency - the way the founders treat co-ops and anyone who challenges their way of thinking completely lacks respect and basic human decency. I’ve even heard the founders bad mouth their competitors and spread false rumours about their competitors’ products and services. I’ve even heard the founders say borderline racist and misogynistic things out in front of the team. - Inability to Learn - the startup culture motto is “you don’t know what you don’t know” so you learn from others like your advisors, mentors and other leaders. The founders have this ‘know it all’ mentality that actually is quite detrimental to the growth of company. They don’t think there’s any value in learning from mentors or advisors and believe everything is done right their way. - Poor Compensation - they pay low and even expect you to cover your own expenses when you do thing on the company’s behalf. Their job postings make it seem like they have a true startup culture but this company is the furthest thing from a true startup. The CEO walks around in a suit for crying out loud!

EMAGIN Clean Technologies Response
7y
A note from our Founders: We have taken this review as an opportunity for self-reflection in order to respond appropriately. We hold transparency, integrity, and honesty as our core values and this translates into how we treat each other, investors and customers. Our standards are high when it comes to how we operate and taking shortcuts or cutting corners is not something we do or accept. While we acknowledge some truth to parts of this review, we also recognize that there is misinformation at the heart of it. We are a young company and while growing pains may exist, we see this as an advantage in being open-minded and not entrenched in old ways of working. Learning on the job and recognizing our gaps in knowledge or skills has been a great journey that we look forward to continuing on. The learning opportunities and responsibilities afforded to us by these leadership positions are not taken lightly and we aim to constantly improve. One of our lessons learned has been to hire well-qualified and expeienced people to surround ourselves with, from whom we take advice, suggestions and who have a strong role to play in the direction of our company. We are learning from our employees on a daily basis. As a quickly growing company, we do sometimes get overwhelmed by work, and are learning to handover responsibilities to a growing team of trusted and respected people, so that we may focus on improving and managing our business. We invite anyone to reach out directly to our existing employees and ask them about their experiences working with us at EMAGIN, and welcome any applicants to speak to us about any concerns they may have. We hope to welcome even more qualified candidates to the team to help us achieve our vision of a world where resources are well managed, affordable and accessible.

Pros

Relative independence: Given a goal or priority, you're given the freedom to define an approach and commit to it. Direct exposure to outcomes: When you deliver a feature, you know exactly who's using it and will get feedback on how they feel about it. Ethical industry: You're not trying to collect and sell user data. You're helping organizations gain insight into their water usage and giving them tools to act on this insight. Nice humans: At Emagin, I am able to relate to people honestly and productively with compassion. At previous jobs, I've been dismissed and felt like I wasn't being taken seriously.

Cons

Working in a startup can feel hectic and disorganized. New people are added. Teams are re-organized. Communication habits need to be established. This can feel stressful for some people, as it can feel as if the management is apathetic or uncaring. Related to this "dynamicism", there are multiple occasions when claims were made and then not provided. For example: - Computer hardware, such as laptops and monitors predicted to arrive within a month have not arrived 6 months later - Insurance coverage, claimed to be fulfilled before the next year, delayed until Series A funding is acquired. Neither of these are particularly important to me, but over-confidence can feel like deception for some. Compensation is okay. If I cared, I could "sell out" and go work for some adtech company, but instead I'm staying.

Pros

- I could name a number of things that I love about Emagin, but the single most important thing to me was how much the Founders believed in me. Management go out of their way to make time to ensure the work we do allows us to grow in our careers for the long term. - Everyday you collaborate with smart, mission-driven developers and engineers that bring the best out of you on a day-to-day basis. - The tech speaks for itself, if you’re looking to work with AI/ML technologies, this is the place to be. Their product is well known in the industry. - The diversity and work culture is amazing! They have weekly events and activities like board games, sports and even VR gaming!

Cons

- I think with every startup, it is expected that you will have tough deadlines to hit, it’s definitely a fast paced environment but what company isn’t? - No matter where you work, work-life balance can always be challenging. I think it comes down to how the individual handles it.
