Pros

1-Similar to other agencies, their kitchen is stocked weekly with snacks. Unfortunately unless you have the appetite of a teenage boy and only want to eat sugary granola bars, this won’t be a benefit. 2-They have a really lackadaisical work from home policy. They have numerous people who work from home pretty much daily, and some are managers which is good for those individuals but difficult if you need to work with them or report to them. For everyone else, you can WFH whenever you like, with almost no explanation needed. There are many times I saw people would come in the office in the AM and out in the PM to WFH – like work is a drop-in centre! Slackers paradise. This just furthers my point that it’s great if you’re not that ambitious and just like to get by.

Cons

1-Misogynistic company Before I started working there, my male friend looked at the company site (it’s been updated since) and asked me, in a somewhat alarmed/joking voice, “Do any women work there?!?!” At first I didn’t think this was a big deal, but as I got to know, it IS a big deal. This is a very misogynistic environment and it comes from the two owners. There are/were about 11 women there for the 50-odd males. That is not an average split, especially for this industry. Of the few women that work there, most have traditionally administrative jobs – admin assistant, accounts payable, HR etc with only one female holding a senior/management title. Even worse, there are numerous males with senior/director/management titles that in any other company, would not be deserving of those titles. I’m not exaggerating when I say that if you’re an intelligent, professional, confident female who cares about her career, you should not work here. 2-Management/owners lack vision and skills The company and direction of the company lack clarity. It seems like there is no clear vision on who they are, what they stand for and what they want to evolve into. This comes from leadership, because the partners don’t really know what they’re doing or even what their individual roles are; one with his hands in each department trying to implement “process” on the spot without consulting departments or employees, reluctant to adopt better tools and technology, and the other unable to focus on anything long enough to do anything more than schmooze clients and party. 3-Rash decision-making across the board People are in, then out and it happens quickly. The same goes for clients/projects that you work on and process – one day you work on a project, the next day the client and project are axed. It’s scary to work somewhere where there is so much uncertainty – clearly no planning or thought put into important decisions. 4-No mentorship/career development or training If you’re lucky enough to know who you report to, you’ll be even more lucky if your manager either physically works in the office, or even cares enough to talk to you. I saw no career coaching/mentorship or career development initiatives happening in the company in any department/role. There is no process for on-boarding or training when you start and an overall lack of support and consideration for your career, development, goals, or happiness. 5-Unprofessional environment Both of the partners are actually friends with a few of the employees outside of work and that’s a serious conflict on many levels. As a business owner, you should know the difference between personal and professional. On numerous occasions I overhead conversations about things that should not be discussed in the open – it’s not fun when you have to hear the tail end of a conversation about one of the owners of the companies weekend full of partying and females. Gross! The office space is also not very professional. Sure agencies often go for a casual open environment, but this place was messy, just like a frat house. Random things all over the place because no one has pride on where they work and no space to collaborate. They only have 1.5 meeting rooms and one of those is the boardroom which is always booked. To make it worse, there are 3 additional rooms/offices which are occupied by the two partners and one for HR. Seriously, lose the ego, give up the valuable meeting space/office and give your employees meeting rooms! 6-No social culture This place is cold. There is no sense of team, and definitely the most dog-eat-dog place I’ve worked at. They boast being an equal opportunity employer but fit is not considered when staffing – but hey, when people are so disposable I guess it doesn’t matter. Of course this all contributes to the fact that there is no genuine socializing, people don’t care to form friendships and even though there are planned company events, it ends there. One HR person once told me that come Friday at 5pm she can’t get out of there faster. So if you enjoy the agency vibe and rituals like after work drinks, friendships, lunches, parties and beer o’clock, you will not find that here.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your feedback. Although I read through our glassdoor reviews frequently, I have not personally replied to them. This was a hard review to read and I felt it needed to be addressed We get groceries delivered every Monday which is a perk that our employees love. We spend about $250.00 a week on groceries. In our last bill, $230.00 was spent on fruit, healthy granola bars and cereal, dried fruit, nuts, and oats. $20.00 was spent on not so healthy snacks, as per request from our team. Our work from home policy is something that our employees value. We know this because we conduct internal surveys and working from home is a perk that employees appreciate. We understand that different types of people work well in different types of environments. We like to give our employees the flexibility to come into the office, or work from home – whatever environment they are most productive in. Within our management team, we have 4 men and 3 women. We constantly strive for diversification. It would be great to have more women in the office and in technology altogether. All our hiring is ran by two women. When we are hiring someone, we look at skill level and culture fit – none of which has to do with gender. Multiple employees at Climax Media are mentors for coding schools (specifically for women), and we also hosted a Ladies Learning Code workshop at our office this summer. We are a digital agency – meaning we have multiple projects going on at once. Some people love this type of work, while others find it difficult. If working on a single product or project is something that is important to you, a product based company would be a great fit. We have a github wiki dedicated to onboarding and continued learning. We have subscriptions to plural site and egghead where our employees can take courses on anything technology related – whether it’s in their field or not. We work with the Canada Ontario Job Grant program so that our employees can take courses outside of work. For example, recently one of our front-end developers wanted to learn more about SEO. They completed a course and have been working on internal projects to utilize their new SEO skills. COJG and Climax Media covered this course. I am good friends with my business partner. We started working together when we were 17 and have since then become very close with our long-standing employees. We have an open, lofty space in Liberty Village which is typical of an agency environment. It’s an open office where employees are working together and collaborating. Some employees need private offices, like our HR, because they are conducting interviews and having confidential conversations about wages, hiring, employee relations, etc. We put a lot of time and effort into planning social events for our staff. If you check out our Instagram and Facebook, you’ll see the wide range of events we have had over the past couple of years. Last week we wrapped up our Stress Relief Week where we had on-site massages, meditation and mindfulness workshops, a yoga class, and a workout class. We also recognize that people have friends and family outside of work; and if they want to head out at 5:00 PM on a Friday to see their family – that’s great! We have lunches, parties, and beer on Friday’s for our employees to partake in if they choose. Our work culture is something we put a lot of time and energy into, in fact, we have placed 6th and 5th in Canada’s Great Places To Work awards the past two years. If you’d like to chat further about any of this, I would be happy to connect. Please contact me directly. Thank you again for taking the time to give your opinion on Climax Media and I hope I was able to address some of your concerns. Thanks, John Wilk Managing Partner

Pros

Many of the negative comments left in prior reviews are either heavily exaggerated or are reflective of a period in the company that has come and gone. This speaks to towards both management and the employee base as a whole to evolve and learn from any unfavorable experiences or mishandling. Opportunities for employees to work with latest technologies and tools to help stay current and provide clients with optimal solutions. The lively location allows for post-work opportunities for coworkers to socialize and enjoy themselves outside of work. Beer, wine, snacks, perks, routine company outings and a general commitment to treating people well and with respect.

Cons

Project timelines are sometimes more condensed than preferred which can result in waves of long hours (this is not unique to Climax).
