Pros

The name. Everyone talks about how good this school is and what a phenomenal reputation it has. To be honest, I had such good feelings about this school when I first got here. It's a massive campus in the middle of nowhere, but it's beautiful. Wide open spaces and gardens. They sort you out with a legal visa too (but most of that cost will fall on you).

Cons

Western staff and Chinese staff are treated differently from one another. That's to be expected (unfortunately) in China. But it's a system that divides the Chinese and western staff members and causes resentment and hatred. Things the Chinese staff members are fined for: the children not finishing their snacks, the children not sleeping during nap time, the students talking during lunch time, not having created enough games for the theme of the week, leaving papers on top of the piano, the list goes on and on. Chefs at the school are fined if the Western staff does not eat the western meals (a piece of toast with mayo and strange ham + boiled broccoli). These fines aren't imposed on the Western staff. I think this is because management knows people will walk if they were to try to pull this kind of stuff with the Western staff. My teacher would insult me in Chinese in the classroom or on WeChat groups all the time ("The western teacher is so relaxed, we need parents to come be the TAs in the classroom", "You only like Teacher XXX because XXX doesn't criticize you in class." etc etc). The trainings were pointless and untimely. We were given a training on swimming class a few months after the class started. It was a toxic environment and the moments of joy I experienced were solely from the children. I worked really hard, but because I didn't have the same intense amount of required paperwork/trainings as the Chinese staff, my Chinese co-teacher resented me. I would come home and go straight to sleep some days because the day was too stressful and exhausting. The callused way the teachers would treat the students sometimes shocked me. You get used to it eventually but it changes you. I finished my contract but turned and ran right after. The people who have been there for over 2 years are mostly non-natives who are fantastic teachers but unfortunately because of their passports, they are having trouble finding new work.
