Pros

The theory of providing a quality education to disadvantaged students is great. They are always hiring, so if you're a teacher that needs a job it'll be there and salary is on par with other districts and charters. There are also other great employees to commiserate with.

Cons

There are always jobs because nearly every employee is actively seeking other employment. High turnover is never a good sign for a company. Many of the schools are in facilities that are in total disrepair and they do little, if anything, to maintain them. They preach academic rigor, but really it's just cramming in tons of assessments and moving so quickly with material that students are set up to fail. Then they require data reflections every week for teachers to decide upon reteaching lessons to help students, but there is no time to actually provide those lessons. Even on shortened weeks, 3 or 4 days, the same work is expected. Data has to be displayed in the room and the school expects an 80% so even early in their schooling students feel unsuccessful and stressed. Plus, art isn't academically rigorous so it can't be displayed in the room. Apparently they don't realize VAPA standards exist. They require many pages of homework each night but teachers never have paper and the copiers are constantly broken. Project based learning is it's own entity. Rather than letting teachers incorporate it into core subjects, they use Millennium Development Goals and it's another thing to plan for and fit into an already tight schedule. There is limited access to classrooms which makes it difficult to update bulletin boards or work to organize your room and plan at school. Your friends and family will become tired of listening to you complain about the horrible and bizarre requirements of your job.

Pros

Best reasons to work at Celerity are: 1. Supportive! Principals and other admin staff are supportive and approachable 2. Positive School Culture- Admin works hard to create a welcoming space for teachers, students and parents 3. Collaborative environment- Many opportunities to work with colleagues and colleagues are happy to collaborate 4. Opportunities for upward mobility

Cons

Some of the downsides: 1. The amount of work can be challenging.Organization and time management are key to survival, as well as working wth others. 2. Depending on your location, faciities are not necessarily "aesthetically pleasing". The staff make up for that though.

Pros

The only positive about this school is that the staff that work directly with the children are very caring and go the extra mile to meet the children's needs.

Cons

First of all, the administration of this school likes to micro-manage the staff. They also will one week make protocol changes and then change those decisions the next week. Then they blame the staff for not understanding what is expected of them. The administration belittles staff in front of the children showing no solidarity and providing a hostile work environment. Also, the staff is SIGNIFICANTLY under paid. When compared with current rates for positions at other schools, Celerity is about $5.00 below the standard. The children are expected, by administration, to be "Creative" when playing on the playground but aren't provided with equipment or grassy areas to do so. So naturally, there are behavioral issues with the children due to a lack providing them with an outlet for excess energy. The administration, blames the staff for such behavioral issues, claming that they are inept at managing these behaviors. The staff is constantly being asked to take on more work and not being compensated for that work. The administration tends to refuse to hire more people to share the load, even after people quit. The staff is always being interrupted during breaks and lunchtime to attend to issues that would be handled if there were more staff on hand. It is an expectation of administration that staff step away from their "duty-free" break times to take care of issues and this is not only unrealistic but also ILLEGAL.
