Pros

They have a very nice building surrounded by a picturesque lake, a walking path, and a decent view of the freeway so you can watch all the cars go by and wonder if they have a better employer than you.

Cons

Upper management ruthlessly rules the tribe with the ever-effective Attila The Hun management style. 'Leaders' are held to unrealistic standards, and are blamed for whatever happens in their area, even if problems are created by people and situations outside their control. While private corporations usually have something to offer as an advantage over their publicly held competitors, this one offers very little. Without the accountability of a publicly-traded corporation, this is a company whose senior 'leadership' feels that they have a right to be petty tyrants in their happy little fiefdoms. There is a plaque in the lobby that roughly says, among other things, "Whatever you do, do it with compassion." I have seen good people who were struggling in their role treated like disposable drones. It is too much to expect an organization like Carlson to seriously consider the well-being of its 'interchangeable parts' workers. I can understand why Hubert Joly left for Best Buy. I sure wouldn't want to work for that batch of hyenas.
