It is my opinion that management is very top down in its approach to relations with employees. I found it nearly impossible to present alternative opinions or approaches to business challenges. In my view and echoed by colleagues during my tenure, the president is a micromanager. For example, a colleague started a project that should have taken two weeks, but the project was strung through many meetings and revisions that it was six months and it wasn't done, and it's possible it is still not done. It is not because the project was being improved or refined, it was simply because it was frequently being changed due to management. Intercompany problems are resolved poorly. For example, duties and responsibilities were unclear regarding one of the supplier/brand partners. While that was being hashed out via email, one of the parties instead took her opinions to the president. Instead of the president bringing the parties together, he simply took the party that was being "tattled" about aside and leveled the other side's opinion. That was that. What this did was engender an environment in which employees see resolution as a tactical move rather than one for the benefit of the whole of the company. During my stint, I saw over ten employees be fired or resign--in seven months. I've never worked at a place that watched the clock as deeply as this company. I was scolded (I use that word very deliberately, as that is what it was) for leaving at 5:30 (arriving daily at 8:30) despite management knowing I have a child in preschool. The company is understaffed, and as such overworked. I've seen tears and high stress levels. At the home office, there is one male (the president) and all other employees are females, many under 35 years old. During my seven months at the company I saw one male employee hired then fired; learned that just prior to my arrival two male employees had also been hired and fired. It is my opinion that male employees are unwelcome and this is a serious concern for this company.
