High expectations, over worked, little support - Sales and Service Supervisor AvalonBay Communities Employee Review

Pros

Many opportunities to work in various locations through out the country. The team I work with (not managers).

Cons

You have to manage four plus communities and they market it as working in a "neighborhood" but in reality it's a terrible way to over work you and make you work various communities all in one day. The expectations are incredibly high, there is no active phone line for any one to reach you, residents are not allowed in the office (not even for emergencies) and you are instructed to ask them to submit all requests through an app. The expectations are to provide amazing customer service but you don't even know the customers, it’s hard to build relationships as a Supervisor when you are thrown nothing but escalating issues your way, if a move in goes wrong you’re expected to fix it. If a work order takes too long to be taken care of, you get the angry resident, if there’s a neighbor dispute you have to resolve it… etc. Everything is done over a chat or a phone call that you place at your convenience which might not align with your residents schedule. You are then expected to host multiple resident events with a very small budget. The tools to be successful are terrible. Managing communities through an app and expecting positive feedback 100 percent of the time is wild. Also be prepared for a crash course training, there is zero fellow camaraderie with other teams so don’t bother reaching out to coworkers in the area for help (which probably don’t have much time to help anyways since they’re dealing with the same work load). Your work schedule is inconsistent (work hours vary). You might have to settle for a Monday/Tuesday off schedule while the Community Consultants have a Sunday/Monday off schedule. Zero work life balance, vacation time is a pain to get approved and if the office(s) you over see do not have coverage they adjust other Supervisors schedules (causing friction between Supervisors). Commissions are very low for the LA market and bonuses are literally non existent, when you’re offered the job they factor in your bonus potential into your compensation yet the bonus is not a guaranteed amount and your rent discount is a joke at 20 percent off when rent prices are sky high and other companies offer discounts at 40 to 50 percent off to all employees. It's a lot...

Pros

Company culture makes you really appreciate where you work. I definitely agree that is the "people" at AVB that make it great.

Cons

Nothing really... sometimes it is a bit of a struggle to wear so many hats.
