Good Pay, Bad Job - Account Manager Atomic Design & Consulting Employee Review

Pros

The pay was excellent - about 20-25% higher than most companies pay for account managers.

Cons

The management had absolutely terrible communication. By management, I mean the higher level management, as in the owner. Jackie Bese had absolutely terrible communication. For example, when he told you where you had to improve, he wouldn't actually give you details. He'd give you a broad area where you need to improve and expect the improvement to happen by the following week. Also, if an emergency occurs, you're expected to return to work by the time your PTO ends. So God forbid, you end up sick AFTER using up your PTO for a vacation, and you call in sick without PTO left, you will lose your job. The worst part is that when you do lose your job, you aren't given any formal notification. Most jobs send a letter or an email or a phone call or at least even a text. No, not Jackie. Jackie Bese simply terminates you by changing all your login credentials. Once you realize you can't login to do your job, you contact Jackie, to which he will reply, "Your employment at Atomic has been terminated." Mind you, this wasn't during the 90 day probationary period. This was after approximately six months of employment. Another thing that was fishy about Jackie (which I should've seen as a red flag right from the start) is that he was dishonest with clients. For example, he would take on any client regardless of whether or not he believed Atomic Design was right for them. For example, I was handed a new client and he openly stated to me that "This client probably won't last long. It's a dumb business but let's bill them for what we can while they last." Why would you take on a client if you have no intention of actually helping them or believe in their business?

Atomic Design & Consulting Response

Based on this review it is abundantly clear which employee this was and the employment was indeed terminated abruptly after it was discovered the true reason for absence. It had nothing to do with PTO or sick days. It only takes talking to any other employee and they would all say that we are very flexible with sick days, PTO, and requests for time off. We do, however, take action when we discover an employee has lied on initial applications regarding criminal history and the reason for the absence mentioned above involving documented law enforcement offenses (plural). As for any client comments or training expectations that are also mentioned in this review... Our average client retention rate is over 5 years and we work very diligently to ensure our clients get the best service we can offer and give them practical advice to succeed online. In regards to training, we offer annual budgeted compensation to pay for training, provide in-house training, and provide paid-time off for training activities. This review is a disgruntled employee that was let go for falsifying hiring information and their reason for absence that we discovered through law enforcement websites and documented those findings for the time that was missed.

Pros

- Small, everything you do has a significant impact. - Smart and talented people, including leadership. - Leadership actually, like really does care about their people. - Flexible as possible with personal needs and accommodations. - Leadership is open but respectfully cautious to new ideas. - Casual and down to earth culture. - Fantastic camaraderie and culture, still friends with most of them even after a couple years. - Work from home Wednesdays (pre-covid) - Think and Drink events, which is basically an excuse to have a couple beers and blow off steam on Fridays. - Relatively low turnover for an agency.

Cons

- Small, everything you do has a significant impact. - Small, very little to no internal advancement paths and compensation is under market. - Its an agency so pace can be intense but still better than most. - As a developer, I would have to admit their tech stack is a little boxed in and quite a bit behind. But their clients don't feel that, wouldn't know any better and probably wouldn't care anyway - they get it done and very well too.
