Definite growing pains at Arena - Manager Arena Pharmaceuticals Employee Review

Pros

- Some people do appreciate hard work - Company understands we need vendors to get a lot of the work done

Cons

I had some hesitation when signing on at Arena, as it looked like the salaried job I was signing up for was designed for at least two people. I was assured otherwise but I should have trusted my gut. I have averaged between 70 and 90 hours a week for the past 4 months. - Organization prides itself on being lean and agile, but this comes at the risk and result of burning employees out - Some departments have little to no effect on the corporate goals, which decreases motivation to come to work everyday - Ignorance of the fact that deadlines require a bare minimum of people and commitment to reach - Growth in some areas has created unaddressed strain in others Personally, immense stress has caused my quality of both work and life to suffer, and I don’t feel like anything compensates for it.

Pros

Arena offers a great relaxed atmosphere and doesn't interfere with my personal life. The stress level is very low and management is usually pretty understanding of "life-matters" (doctors appts, vacation time use, etc.). Freedom to come in, take lunch, and leave when you want, as long as you get 40 hours/week in and get your work done. Benefits are decent, but could be with a better healthcare network.

Cons

The environment at Arena is awful. It is very dreary, and most employees keep to themselves so there is not too much interaction which makes for a very sad, depressing day. The pay is low compared to other bio-tech companies in the area, and there is absolutely NO room for employee growth, both in level of position, and salary. There are no incentives and no bonuses which also contributes to the sad, dreary work environment. The responsibilities and work load held among non-management employees is pretty much equal which makes the salary differences hard to understand. Harder working employees should be rewarded, but never are.
