Pros
AVI-APL is a very large company. As such, you have access to a vast wealth of knowledge and experience. If you are willing to reach out there is always someone who can help you out. The relationships with a wide range of vendors is also very helpful. Not only from a pricing standpoint but support on the pre and post sales side of projects. Some vendors even have dedicated AVI teams. There is a wide range of projects from small signage or huddle rooms to large corporate venues, even an occasional theme park attraction or sports arena. You will certainly have projects that push the limits of current technology and system design. It's a great place to get exposure to a wide variety of projects. The access to training, both internal and external, is great. Especially if you have a manager that values a well rounded team. Most of the management I've worked with has valued having a well rounded team.
Cons
The benefits package is disappointing for a company this size. PTO, health insurance, 401k matching, etc is on par with the industry (that's not really saying much). A company of this size and revenue should be able to offer better benefits and compensation. They should be setting industry trends, not following them. Operations/technical staffing is stretched thin in a lot of places. It seems that systems are in place to try and hide how overworked certain offices/positions are. When upper management looks at the metrics to decide if a new position is justified, it looks like everything is getting done within the limits of the current staff. Upper management seems to be more concerned with revenue, margin, employee utilization, and other metrics than the quality of work. Luckily our PMs and technicians care and will try to balance the requests from management with good customer service and quality installations
