    I worked at Anglo American

    Pros

Free lunch - Amazing how this balanced evenly with all the cons. Excellent food provided daily. Free alcohol - last Friday of the month (I do not drink but the culture heavily revolves around alcohol) Easy 6 months, never felt so full of energy in my spare time outside of 'work'. Security and kitchen staff were excellent. Management often make staff aware of recent deaths caused as a result of the work they doing and often refer to goals of striving towards minimising them.

    Cons

Having been given no work to complete in 6 months, I was there from March to October. I left not knowing much about the company or what they do on a daily basis. Communication was poor. Induction was meaningless and souless where by nothing from it materialised. Emails just go around in circles with no resolution.

    Advice to Management

Trust the staff you employed (having been through extensive checks) to do the job you are paying them to do by giving them something to work on / towards. One coffee machine per floor creates long queues, seems obvious to install another. Something to tackle when you move to Farringdon perhaps if efficiency becomes important.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Anglo American full-time

    Pros

Good salary and Benefits. Reasonable work and life balance

    Cons

Good Salary and Benefits - The budget holders seem to think just a good pay will generate good revenue for their division in data/digitalisation area. Unfair advantages and harassment is common in the data teams - staff don't talk about it because they are afraid of losing a well paid job.

    Advice to Management

Before start allocating big money for digitalisation, ask yourself: 1) Do you have enough data ? 2) Do you still use and rely on Excel extensively ? 3) Have you defined KPIs for your digital team ? 4) Are your digital managers are able to communicate these to the team fairly and transparently? 5) What is the first thing your digital team will deliver once in place? 5) What kind of support and development plan you have for your digital team? Unfortunately the Digital Hive has no idea about any of these. Just paying good salary is not going to get you anywhere. Processes and good people managers are necessary.

    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Anglo American full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Competitive salary plus allowances, bonus, financial assistance with accomodation. Great opportunities for hands on operations and maintenance experience as a graduate.

    Cons

Culture of long hours/unpaid overtime at most but not all Anglo sites, lack of rosters that allow good work/life balance for office staff living in mining towns (monday to friday staff on salary only) lack of appropriate work or mentors for mechanical engineering graduates

    Advice to Management

Dont take mechanical engineering grads, or take much less and be smarter about who you allocate them too. Head hunt mech engineers from mining consultancies who have a broader skillset and will be more useful instead. 1 of them is worth 3-5 grads and will transition quickly to valuable leadership roles. Grad program for mech engineers at anglo is not sufficient, grads are mostly allocated to departments who don't have suitable work or mentors for them, setting them up for a tough time surpassing the grad program without pursuing non-engineering disciplines. Neither of the sites I was allocated to as an engineering graduate had any mechanical engineers.
