Instron interview question

You have nine nuts, one of which is a different weight but you can’t tell visually. You can take measurements using a balance scale. How can you find the nut of a different weight with only two measurements?

I said I could only do it in three, however the correct answer is to split the nuts in three groups, measure one group against another with the third put to the side. If the two groups balance then the different nut is in the group put to the side, otherwise it’s in the heavier group. With the group of nuts identified with the different nut, put one nut to side, and weigh one nut against each other. If they balance than the nut out to the side is different, otherwise it’s the heavier one on the scale.
