First interview was an informal chat with CTO. General topics covered my background and the duties that would be required in the new role. Very laid back and friendly atmosphere; invited to round 2.
Round 2 was a video interview using HireVue - a strange and disconnected experience which contradicted the personal cohesive atmosphere portrayed earlier. The interview could be taken in your own time and involved 10 questions after an initial practice round. The first 5 questions were of a HR/Textbook nature "Describe a methodology X..."; "Tell me what you understand by the code XXX and what it would produce" - you speak your answers to the screen while your video camera and microphone record. The second half were 5 problem-solving questions that involved writing a Method in your chosen software language in the HireView browser/application. No inteli-sense or feedback other than pressing the "Compile" button and it works or doesn't.
Round 2 took roughly an hour.
While being able to take part in an interview in your own time avoids calendar conflicts and a larger number of candidates can be screened in a short amount of time, do not underestimate the importance of the personal touch of being in the same room.
