Dr. Richard King is the ICU Division Chief for Renown Health in Reno. Although I ended up accepting another job in a different state for family reasons, Rich deserves kudos for the ICU program that he has built at Renown over the last several years. His multi-team ICU model has a built in "pop-off" valve so that one ICU service never gets bogged down nor overwhelmed. In turn, this leads to optimal patient care since no one doc ever has a patient census that is, at best, barely manageable. It also helps to mitigate the risk of physician burnout. It's clear that Rich has built the Renown ICU program around providing the best patient care and taking care of the docs that work under him so they enjoy long careers. Most importantly, Rich was very down to earth, easy to talk with, honest, and transparent throughout the entire interview process. It's easy to see that he is trying to build the best Intensivist team possible as opposed to just plugging any interviewee into a Renown ICU. For those of us who have had the displeasure of working under malignant hospital administrators, it's important to note that Rich is the type of administrator that you should want to work for!
