The entire process took just over a month:
1 - Contacted by the recruiter... then waited a week
2 - Spoke with hiring manager... then waited another week
3 - Technical interview... then waited another week to set up travel and then waited 2 more weeks for the interview
4 - In person interview... then waited another week, received no response, and had to contact them myself in order to be informed that the "role was being revamped"
First off, the recruiter and various personnel that I dealt with at Pandora were difficult to get in touch with and seemed unwilling to communicate even some of the basic facts that were needed as the interview process went on.
Second and third, the hiring manager was communicative enough, as were the team members who conducted my technical interview, so there were no real issues with these stages
Fourth, the in person interview. Whew, this was a mess. The coordinator who set things up didn't even provide me with a schedule or where I needed to go until I was in the air on my way to Oakland. I was put up in an ancient rat's nest of a hotel (something bit me while I was there and I came home with a wound on my arm) with no furniture besides a very worn bed and no air conditioning near Union Square where things start to get sketchy. I had to rely on public transportation to get to and from the interview, though to be fair it's the Bay area, so BART isn't that bad. Once I got there I had 5 sessions. In a particularly bad session I spoke with members of the "build team" who clearly had no idea what they were doing as they had no real idea of how to use Jenkins properly (they were confused by the concept of executors and pre and post build steps) or how to use the tools that they were supposed interviewing me to use. Most of the other sessions had zero relevance to the position and it really it felt like they were just filling time. At the end, the hiring manager spoke with me, told me they would let me know something by the end of the week (as previously mentioned... they didn't), and escorted me out.
After all this, I waited a week and heard nothing from them. I then contacted the recruiter who initially contacted me and was informed that the "team" decided I wasn't a good fit and that the role was being revamped. They basically ghosted me and made me contact them to get rejected. I cannot properly express how unprofessional this was.
Here's the long and short of it: don't waste your time with Pandora. The company is burning through its most recent cash infusion and likely won't still be around by the end of 2019. Spotify and Apple own the music streaming industry and account for over 80% or all subscribers. Not even Google has been able to make significant traction in this market. Pandora is a relic of the early to mid 2000's and their initial radio model, while novel, is nothing special anymore as both Apple and Spotify do it and do it better. Their move to on demand streaming happened far to late for them to be anything resembling competitive. Pandora is going to go away (I highly doubt anyone would acquire them due to the state of the music streaming market) sooner than later and you really shouldn't waste your time interviewing with them as you'll be out of a job likely within a year. Best of luck to you. I hope this has helped you avoid making a bad decision.
