      Channel Marketing Interview

      30 Jul 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Gusto

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter after applying online and was asked for available times to speak with a "team lead" about the role. I provided a few times I would be available on the days requested and didn't hear back. I reached out to the recruiter for an update and she promptly responded with a few more available times, to which the interview was officially booked. I was scheduled to meet with an employee who started the call off by telling me about herself and her role (which didn't seem to be aligned to the team I would be on) where she then proceeded to tell me about their initiative to move towards a channel strategy. She also made sure to throw in that the VP of Marketing came from Google, which was an immediate red flag (sort of an odd thing for someone to feel compelled to promote) She then asked me a series of "Ex-Google" styled questions as I like to call them; all things that had nothing to do with the actual role but were more "critical thinking" problems. I responded to one question and the interviewer became incredibly rude and robotic, demanding that I re-answer the question in a different dialogue. I was so surprised and turned off by her tone, especially as a potential candidate but continued with the remaining questions. At the end, she asked if I had any questions (I had many, as we did not speak about the company, the business initiatives, any requirements of the role and what they expected nor did she even mention anything about their channel initiative and strategy) I said I was confused by the call overall, assuming we would be speaking about the role and my background to which she answered "we believe in hiring smart people" which nearly made me laugh out loud. As I started to ask her questions, it became incredibly clear that she a.) knew nothing about the job role b.) knew nothing about the actual business strategy around the role and c.) was unfamiliar with what the channel even is and how it can grown a business. I actually don't think I got one thoughtful or informative answer to any of my questions. What a waste of my time! Needless to say, this was a learning experience and in the future I will be cutting future interviews short if they even remotely start to go down a similar path. It was a huge waste of my time and left a bad taste in my mouth primarily because the interviewer was rude and inexperienced.
