I cold called the company to ask about open positions, and after a brief chat - where the manager asked about my experience, etc. - was invited down to attend a weekend of rookie training for a kind of trial run.
I made it down for the weekend, and got a decent glimpse into company operations. From what I saw, the manager seems not to have very much respect for his guides. He was constantly yelling at and berating the rookie (and other) guides, both on the water and off - frequently in front of clients. At one point when a guide's friend fell out of their boat, his response was not only completely blown out of proportion to the severity of the situation, but also pretty unsafe. Not a lot of chance to have fun with clients or experiment - lots of micromanaging. An unusually high waiting:hurrying up ratio.
I ended up not pursuing this role due what amounted to a toxic work environment - which is such a shame because so many aspects of the operation - the co-manager, facilities, welcoming guides, and the beautiful surroundings - were amazing.
