I worked at npower full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    They have hot food onsite.

    Cons

Bullying culture from senior management down. Rudeness is everywhere. Very lazy staff. No accountability, direction or strategy. Recruitment is awful. Decisions on direction change weekly. All managers are faking it and prioritise looking clever and sounding strong to hide their weaknesses. Everyone is completely demoralised. Some people literally do nothing all day. Stress and anxiety sickness at 20%. Truly awful... experience. If you care you are told you "care too much". 95% of the population don't have the skill or will to do the job.

    Advice to Management

You are a million miles away from a successful business culture. It would take years of dedication to improve the behaviours and work ethics of every level of employee. And no-one has ever properly tried. Just at least try to treat people like human beings.

    I worked at npower

    Pros

Had some good leadership, now gone. Part of a multi national group which is heading in the right direction. A number of excellent staff and a good customer base (eroding).

    Cons

Overly conservative senior management, poor processes and attitude to risk. Reluctant to change despite the majority of the multi national group embracing the changing market.

    Advice to Management

Loosen up, fix the processes (not just sticky tape fixes but accept the model is broken and address the core issues)... appreciate the excellent staff more and stop acting like the market owes you a living.

    I worked at npower

    Pros

    Good, friendly and knowledgable employees

    Cons

An inability by senior management to make decisions due to a heavily silo'd yet interdependent organisation that is totally lacking joined up priorities and in many cases co-operation. Long serving managers are obsessed with governance to the extent that when this is combined with the silo organisation results in a lack of timely and effective joined up action.

    Advice to Management

Remove the excess governance and either simplify the organisation structure or ensure that the priorities of service functions are fully aligned to the mainstream business imperative. Adhere to the core values that are supposed to underpin and improve the organisation culture.

I have been working at npower full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good holidays, decent pay, open and honest, great mental health support in fact, great support in general and facilities are excellent including a free gym. Good work life balance with opportunity to work agile.

    Cons

Perception of company not great due to previous senior management decisions leading to unsuccessful resolution of complaints.

    Advice to Management

Stay on track with current plans to reinvigorate the business and change how customers view npower. I have seen some senior managers being very hierarchical lately which needs to be nipped in the bud. There are a number of people who sadly fall into this area.

I have been working at npower full-time for less than a year

    Pros

local employer in the North of England. Nice not to have to go to London. Large client base with some interesting industry challenges.

    Cons

1970s male dominated culture. Tolerates poor behaviours and is an old boys club at the most senior level. Senior roles taken by consultants and teams of contractors - many of the contractors having worked for senior management at other organisations.

    Advice to Management

Act with integrity - don't wait for ofgem to make you do the right thing, Stop the turf wars and public displays of management fallout

I worked at npower full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Initial training was very good. Trainer was knowledgeable and enthusiastic which generated a good sense of team work. The system for booking time off was excellent.

    Cons

Bad communication from senior management. Managers have very little respect employees. Massive blame culture which generates a very depressing environment to work in. When I left moral was extremely low. No set track for career development or cross departmental training. Not everyone has access to e-mail! This should be standard in a large company!

    Advice to Management

Spend some time on the call centre floor. Speak to Customer Service Advisors and take on board their comments. They are representing the company every day, and if they are unhappy with their working environment they will not work to their fullest potential and it will come across to the customer.
