I have been working at Version 1 full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Version 1 really is all about Core Values and its people. It has gone above and beyond in these times to really makes sure the employees are well looked after and safe. I'm shocked by other reviews saying their are no female senior management when 3 out of 4 portfolio directors in Ireland are female. 2 out of three in the ERP division are female. Head of Strategy is female. This is a total lie and as a female who attends alot of meetings with the senior management - I'm certainly not an outlier. People are very approachable and will always give time to those who look for it. The Core Value of Honesty & Integrity though means sometimes you don't really like the answer you hear - but this may be needed and has definitely made me better at my role. The Company has high expectations from its employees and I've observed the efforts made to support those who struggle and ensure they can develop to the standard. There are a huge range of opportunities to get involved in more than just work - there is a strong CSR initiative called Community First and a Diversity & Inclusion Programme as well a Mentoring and Buddy system. Each team has a "Buzz Manager" to create a social and friendship bond in the team. Some are better than others though... There is very little "politics" that goes through the management team. I've worked in places where you can visibly see the knifes being put into others backs and this just doesn't happen here. There's a great sense of what did we learn and how do we avoid this happening again when something goes wrong rather than a blame game.

    Cons

The pay is below market rate but with the other rewards and the culture in the Company - that's a reward that, for now, i'm willing to forego.

I have been working at Version 1 full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The best thing about Version 1 is the people. There's a start-up vibe to some parts of the business where people are pulling in the same direction, innovating and building cloud-native stuff. It can be intense, but when you're working in a team all trying to achieve the same goal, you don't mind. It's never boring. Compensation's competitive. Company's very stable despite coronavirus.

    Cons

Some good people have left - but they're usually moving up the career ladder and taking positions with huge companies like Google & Microsoft. It can be hard to keep people when they come knocking. Some people struggle with the pace & pressure - good people who can't keep up / manage their time. It's unfortunate, but just the nature of consultancy.

I have been working at Version 1 full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some projects flexible on hours and working from home ability

    Cons

CPD promotion system is a farce, Salary completely tied to it, nobody truly knows whats required to climb the ranks, inconsistent managers make efforts to rise up the ladder a nightmare, as one manager will lay out X things to achieve for raise, but then you swap, and new manager doesn't agree with those X things and tells you to now do Y things instead and now the last 3-4 months of efforts were pointless and just free beneficial extra responsibility you undertook for the company with no reward for yourself. Brainwashing of Core Values, Many outdated clients / tech fearing lead to frustrating development conditions, Sales love to sell projects and don't care if its feasible. Recently branched out to India and many developer jobs are now positioned there.

I have been working at Version 1 full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent opportunities to gain certification They attract good hard working people who genuinely do uphold the core values Some of the regular people (not the management) are supportive and there for you If you're lucky, you will get to work with some good customers with known names and who are using up to date technologies for the project If you are lucky, you will get a manager who cares about your team

    Cons

The least social company I've ever worked in. I'm not a fan of the companies that make you stick around for beers every night after work, but no one speaks to new people (in Dublin anyway) and there is no HR or any office manager around to help you settle in or introduce you to people around the place There is maybe 1-2 big nights out a year - but nothing else unless you are lucky to have a manager who organises things for your team themselves such as birthday lunches, or team activities The company claims to be diverse and inclusive - yet no minority group or females have been part of decisions as there are none in the senior management - therefore you can expect to be overlooked for promotion for the 'favourites' or the family members of long-standing employees who seem to be able to hand pick their people for roles. You will hear a lot of talk and celebration of diversity There is a hierarchy of older men who have been at the company a long time that you are supposed to respect/ know not to argue with/ that you won't get a cordial hello or acknowledgement from Many of my colleagues have been told to put up with rude or offensive people and managers as that's apparently 'just the way they are' and you are wasting your time telling HR as they've been aware and ignoring it for years Although the core values, mission and ethos of the company attracted me, the company itself isn't ran well and it is it's own worst enemy - it has a management team that has learned to maintain the status quo and will implement policies and systems that negatively impact those of us who have to live with them day to day - we are always hearing from cynical managers who seem to have just 'given up' that that's what 'Manager's name' says, and they do what they want. The company has the same people at the top for a very very long time and it's all stagnating - it's OK if you are happy to upskill on your personal time and in your own way, but don't expect support or understanding if you wish to develop tech skills or training outside of partner technologies as I was told I couldn't You aren't included in any of the decisions regarding where you work, when you work - so although the company itself might give you some flexibility to work from home, some customers won't allow any of this and may have archaic views on things

    Version 1 Response

    March 10, 2020Marketing

We are sorry that you didn't have a great experience during your time here. Working at a high-performance organisation like Version 1 isn't for everyone. Change is constant in our business, and we ask our team members to be agile in their approach to work, as we serve customers in an industry that changes daily. We reject the notion that these customers are "terrible to work for" and suggest that, as you stated yourself, consultancy work simply wasn't the best career move for you. We would prefer that you just noted it wasn’t for you rather than writing a review containing mainly mistruths, however we wish you, as we do all leavers, the very best in your future career.
