I worked at University of Pennsylvania Health System full-time

    Pros

If you are really into generating new research, the docs are great mentors. If you are Caucasian, you will really fit into the culture here.

    Cons

Little accessibility, no transparency. Clinical care is put on the back burner. These providers only check their phones/EPIC once a week, sometimes only once every 2 weeks. They expect you to manage medications and call in/sign orders such as meds and PT/OT/ST even though that is not the RN's scope of practice. They will tell you with empty words that they care about you and want to make sure you feel comfortable... in your job.

    Advice to Management

Think really hard about why your retention rate is so low. Your turn over rate is an indication that the process you have in place does not work. Listen to the staff when they are telling you they are overwhelmed! "That's how it always is" or "Yeah, well I am overwhelmed too" are not acceptable answers - be open to solutions to problems. When you have a staff size of 35, why is it okay not to hire a staff manager?

I have been working at University of Pennsylvania Health System full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Innovative and altruistic, constantly growing and expanding. Great benefits, lots of locations throughout the geographical area.

    Cons

Lots of opportunities for individual professional growth if you know the right people. A little bureaucratic because the organization is so large but that's to be expected.

    Pros

Penn doesn't fire anyone, they just transfer people to a different department.

    Cons

This is the department they transfer people to when they don't want to deal with them - including management/leadership. The field staff are frequently frustrated because of managerial issues, but the managers are only allowed _minimal_ operating room by senior "leadership", who want _total_ control. The result is an organization that performs with little to no efficiency and no cohesion. There is a culture of... blame that abounds and they are well aware of it. Any opposing voice is quickly demoted, transferred, or encouraged to quit through passive aggressive means.

    Advice to Management

    - Critically evaluate yourselves and ask why you are consistently in the same position. - Look at turn-over rates and conduct exit-interviews with everyone to "uncover" the problem. - Invest in your people instead of just throwing money at problems and not changing anything about the process or environment. - Stop talking poorly about your staff. - Stop trying to desperately maintain control of... everything - you are part of a system. - Recognize that you are part of the problem and that change will only come when you model what you talk about.
